Real Challenges I See in Organizations

Many of the organizations I work with are doing meaningful, necessary work but are navigating challenges that limit their ability to grow, secure funding, and operate with structure and sustainability. Some of those challenges look like:

  • There’s no real board, or one person is carrying everything

Unclear or underdeveloped board roles, responsibilities, and structure

  • There’s no clear plan for funding or long-term sustainability

Limited readiness for grant funding or inconsistent funding outcomes

  • There’s little to no structure, documentation, or systems in place

Gaps in infrastructure, policies, or foundational documents

  • Board members aren’t sure what their roles and responsibilities are

Difficulty building or maintaining an effective, engaged board

  • Everything depends on one person to keep things moving

Leaders feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure of next steps

  • The work is meaningful, but it’s hard to explain or measure

Programs lacking structure, clarity, or measurable impact

  • There’s no clear direction for what comes next

Lack of strategic alignment across programs and leadership

  • It’s difficult to manage requirements, reporting, or compliance

Challenges navigating compliance, documentation, or operational standards

  • It’s hard to clearly communicate value to funders

Difficulty communicating impact and organizational value

How I Help

I work with nonprofit leaders to strengthen their organizations from the inside out, aligning strategy, building strong governance, and putting the right systems in place to support sustainable growth.

  • I help boards understand their roles and responsibilities, including their a legal obligations. Many boards are made up of committed people who want to help but have never been shown how a board is supposed to function. I provide structure, guidance, and tools so the board can operate effectively and with confidence.

  • I help put the foundational pieces in place, policies, procedures, and documentation, so the organization is not operating informally or inconsistently. These are the things that give funders confidence and allow the organization to grow responsibly.

  • I help organizations step back and get clear on what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how all the pieces fit together. Many organizations are doing meaningful work but lack alignment. I help bring clarity so decisions can be made with purpose.

  • I work with organizations to clearly define their programs so they can be communicated, evaluated, and funded. Often the work is happening, but it hasn’t been fully developed in a way that others can understand or support.

  • I help organizations move away from reactive fundraising and toward a more thoughtful, sustainable approach. This includes identifying the right opportunities, preparing for them, and building a strategy that supports long-term growth.

  • I don’t just write grants. I help organizations understand what funders are looking for and whether they are truly ready to apply. This includes making sure the program is clearly defined, the numbers make sense, and the organization can responsibly manage the funding if it is awarded.

The Difference After Working Together

When our work is done, the organization looks and operates differently, not just on paper, but in practice.

  • Leadership is shared, not carried by one person

The board is active, engaged, and understands both its responsibilities and its authority

  • Roles are clear and decisions are no longer stalled

People know what they are responsible for, and work moves forward without everything bottlenecking

  • Programs are defined, aligned, and ready to be supported

The organization can clearly explain what it does, why it matters, and how it creates impact

  • There is a real plan for funding and sustainability

Not just applying for grants, but understanding what to pursue, when, and why

  • Systems are in place to support growth

Documentation, processes, and structure exist so the organization is no longer rebuilding from scratch each time

  • The organization can demonstrate its impact

There is a clear way to measure, communicate, and stand behind the work being done in the community

  • Funders have confidence in how the organization operates

Because there are safeguards, structure, and accountability in place

And most importantly:

The organization is no longer held together by one person’s passion or running on hope. It has structure.

And structure creates the clarity an organization needs to grow, adapt, and continue long after our work together is done.
